David Smith is a father on a mission to reduce the dangerously high air pollution children breathe everyday whilst they travel to school. He’s campaigning for a change in traffic light phasing during the toxic school run, to reduce emissions from vehicles start-stop-idling in congested traffic.

David says:

"I've lived in South London all my life and grew up in Putney/Wandsworth. I’m a happily married, father of four beautiful children, two teenagers, a three-year-old and a baby.
We don’t own a car. We walk, scoot, cycle and for longer journeys we travel by bus, tube, train and the occasional taxi.
We worry about the air our children breathe every day. I’ve told my children that they are little ninjas fighting for their future health against invisible #PollutantMonsters and that they must protect themselves by staying away from idling vehicles.
They do their best but they cannot win this battle for life on their own. "

@RupaHuq Thank you, Rupa.

Our MP really deserves credit for calling out what so many people are trying to brush under the carpet, and trying to encourage a debate. Pushing pollution into boundary/LTN exit roads is a disgrace.

@RupaHuq Thanks
@RupaHuq
- funnelling all cars onto the boundary residential roads is not a way to lessen air pollution. Collecting £1.5m in the process shows this is about money and not the environment.

@PauloCampbell @RupaHuq Can you imaging telling people living on residential boundary roads that in order for people living inside LTN's who already have clean air to have even cleaner air you would make the boundary roads busier, more congested & also make people drive further. Genius...

@RupaHuq Well done Rupa for taking a reasoned approach to new LTN’s. It is amazing how supposed experts in transport strategy have got it so wrong and it betrays the flaws in the pseudo science they use to justify the schemes and their method of rollout.

@cactusmelonism @RupaHuq They most certainly were not designed for private car traffic, still less for car traffic emitted by London's side streets.

Even more importantly, those side streets were not designed for kerbside car storage.

We don't talk about that, because most LTN advocates own cars. 🤷

@SE6Steve @rosamund_ElsFdn @sainsburys @Tesco @LidlGB @asda @AldiUK @CleanAirUK @CleanAirLondon I approached a food deliver driver today and politely asked him to switch off his engine whilst parked. He said he was 'going', then continued #idling #deisel vehicle (on iPhone) next to passerbys with pushchairs etc. Not good enough @sainsburys @LittleNinjaUK @CleanAirLondon
