As the backbone of worldwide peace and security, international justice refers to the global enforcement of law and justice principles. It holds accountable those who commit very serious crimes like war crimes or crimes against humanity.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the world's first permanent international criminal court, operating on the principle of complementarity. This means it does not replace national courts unless they are unable or unwilling to prosecute perpetrators.

Transitional justice mechanisms, such as truth commissions, reparations programs, and institutional reforms, address human rights violations and promote victims' rights by helping societies heal after conflict or authoritarian rule.

  • Preliminary Examinations: ICC investigates four main crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression. It collects information from multiple sources to determine a reasonable basis for investigation.
  • Investigations: Investigators will gather evidence, interview witnesses, and build a case against the suspected perpetrators.
  • Pre-trial: With enough evidence, the Prosecutor can initiate a prosecution by presenting a case to the ICC judges. The judges will decide whether to issue arrest warrants or summonses to appear.
  • Trial: With the accused person brought before the court, the court will determine an appropriate sentence if found guilty, though the verdict and sentence can be appealed.
  • Appeals: Both parties have the right to appeal. The judges will either appeal, amend, or reverse the original decision.
  • Enforcement of sentence
