Sam McClure, a senior director at the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care in Baltimore, conceptualized Honor Our LGBT Elders Day.
The first Honor Our LGBT Elders Day was observed in Baltimore, Maryland, with a small event celebrating the contributions of older LGBT individuals. The Supreme Court also granted full marriage equality to same-sex couples in all 50 states through the landmark decision Obergefell vs. Hodges.
Baltimore officially recognized the event and made it an official observance. Likewise, the Center for LGBT Health Equity of Chase Brexton Health Care added May 16, 2016, to the National Day registry as National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day.
The Human Rights Campaign, one of the largest LGBT advocacy groups in the U.S., acknowledged the annual event on its website and social media platforms.
Representative John Sarbanes introduced a resolution to designate May 16 as Honor Our LGBT Elders Day.
