Why Honor Our LGBT Elders Day Matters

Eelders who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender were part of major historical events like the Stonewall Riots, the AIDS crisis, and the long fight to legalize same-sex marriage.
As co-founder of the Pride Center of Maryland and respected leader in Baltimore’s LGBT community, Silas White reminds us that LGBTQ+ elders “are quite literally living pieces of history.”
However, today, they face discrimination and marginalization, affecting their health and quality of life.
Through Honor Our LGBT Elders Day, we must recognize the contributions of older members of the LGBTQ+ community in the face of prejudice and discrimination. We also show gratitude by pushing for inclusive policies and services.
One area of concern is LGBTQ health equity. Unequal treatment may lead some LGBT elders to conceal their sexual orientation or gender identity. Experts from Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) suggest that support efforts should transition from reactive to proactive measures. Developing inclusive communities and tailored healthcare systems to address the unique needs and challenges of LGBT elders should improve their overall well-being.
Data and Statistics
Currently, an estimated 2.7 million Americans aged 50 and over identify as LGBT. Projections also indicate that by 2060, this number may nearly double.
Ways to Honor Them

- Organize community events and gatherings that celebrate the lives and contributions of LGBT elders.
- Advocate for policies and legislation that protect the rights of LGBT elders.
- Volunteer, donate, and get involved in organizations that support them, like SAGE.
