The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a global humanitarian force composed of three distinct components.

The branches working together are the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and 191 National Societies.

Defined by the Geneva Convention, the ICRC stands as a beacon of hope for victims of armed conflict. Meanwhile, the IFRC orchestrates international relief efforts during disaster and health crises. National Societies, spread across the globe, focus on aiding vulnerable communities within their borders.

All three are unified in the mission to alleviate suffering without discrimination.

Why World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day Matters

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day does this every May 8 through featured stories in the past year honoring the hardships and sacrifices of the brave volunteers. Its message also centers around the movement’s fundamental principles, reminding everyone annually.
