The fashion industry plays a significant role in shaping global trends, but its environmental impact cannot be overlooked. As temperatures rise, so does the demand for stylish yet sustainable summer fashion clothing.

This article examines how eco-friendly fabrics, ethical production, and conscious consumerism are shaping the summer fashion landscape. At the end, we also included our top brands that you can support.

Discover how small choices can make a big difference for both your wardrobe and the planet.

The Environmental Impact of Summer Fast Fashion Clothing

Before we discuss sustainable summer clothing, let’s examine the environmental impact of unsustainable clothing. Having a fast fashion summer wardrobe can cause significant environmental harm. One of these includes the overconsumption of resources, such as water.

The more fast fashion summer clothes are made, the more resources we consume. Statistics show that the industry is the second-largest consumer of water, using approximately 79 trillion gallons of water annually due to various manufacturing processes2, including yarn preparation, fibre production, dyeing, and finishing.

The World Wildlife Foundation claimed that it takes approximately 2,700 gallons of water to produce a cotton t-shirt. Another issue with the clothing sector is its ecological footprint. It can approximately contribute 2-3% of the annual greenhouse gas emissions

There is also fast fashion pollution, a significant environmental issue. The global textile waste record exceeds 92 million tons annually3. Fast fashion waste is rampant because the clothes are of low quality. Manufacturers prioritize speed over quality.

So, a lot of the summer clothes you buy from Shein and other fast fashion producers don’t last as long. There is also the question of microplastic pollution. Producers create fast fashion pieces using synthetic materials, including acrylic, polyester, and nylon.

These fabrics take at least a hundred years to decompose completely. During this process, it releases microplastics, which contaminate water sources, soil, and other ecosystems on the planet.

These synthetic clothes release microplastics at every stage of use, particularly during the laundry process. According to a 2017 report from the IUCN, 35% of the microplastics found in the ocean originate from washing synthetic textiles1.

These are just some of the devastating effects of shopping for fast fashion summer clothing for your wardrobe. Instead, learn how to shop consciously and don’t fall for the fast fashion boom. You can be stylish with minimal environmental impact.

1. Choose Quality over Quantity

When shopping for summer clothes, opt for quality over quantity. Don't buy multiple cheap and trendy garments when you can invest in high-quality pieces that last longer. A well-tailored linen shirt, hemp dress, or cotton pants will last longer than clothes made from polyester material.

It helps you reduce waste and save money in the long term because you won't have to replace garments frequently. Also, prioritize versatility by selecting neutral colors and classic cuts to ensure your summer wardrobe remains stylish and timeless.

2. Choose clothes made with natural and recycled materials

Another way to shop consciously is by choosing clothing made with eco-friendly and recycled fabrics. Wearing clothes made from synthetic fabrics like polyester traps heat, making the summer season less enjoyable.

Eco-friendly materials are fabrics that are biodegradable and do not harm the environment. Some examples of sustainable fabrics are organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, linen, silk, Pinatex, and many more.

There are also clothing items made with recycled materials, which reduces waste in the environment. Pick light and breathable fabrics to stay cool during your summer adventures. To ensure your closet is sustainable, look for certifications such as GOTS or OEKO-TEX to verify ethical production practices.

3. Shop from ethical and eco-friendly brands

It is your environmental responsibility to shop from ethical brands. It is common knowledge that fast fashion brands often exploit workers and the planet as a whole.

So, support brands that prioritize a transparent supply chain, fair wages, safe working conditions, and sustainable practices in their operations.

Look for sustainable fashion brands with B Corp, Fair Trade, or Climate Neutral Certifications. Prioritize fashion companies like Patagonia and Reformation that openly share their sustainability efforts. Let your purchases reflect your commitment to preserving the planet.

4. Improve your fashion game with thrifting

Explore vintage and second-hand fashion stores, as buying thrift clothes reduces demand for production and, consequently, waste in the natural environment and its ecosystems. There are also online thrift stores, such as Depop, ThredUp, and Rent The Runway, where you can find timeless designs.

Vintage pieces add a unique style to your closet while reducing textile waste in landfills. There are also clothes-swapping programs you can explore to keep your summer closet environmentally conscious.

5. Treat your garments with the utmost care

Lastly, how you care for your garment reflects your commitment to maintaining your sustainable wardrobe. Extend garment life by washing in cold water, air-drying, and avoiding harsh detergents.

Repair and mend minor wear and tear instead of discarding them. Maintaining proper laundry habits helps reduce water and energy consumption while keeping your summer outfits in optimal condition.

Eco-Friendly Fabrics To Wear For Your Summer Adventures

The summer season brings golden sunshine, endless blue skies, and warm breezes. Lush greenery thrives, beaches buzz with laughter, and the air hums with cicadas. The temperatures typically range from 25°C to 40°C (77°F to 104°F), with peak heat in midday. Coastal areas stay milder due to breezes, while inland regions face scorching, dry heat.

This means that you need breathable fabrics for when temperatures rise. Choosing the right fabrics can help you stay comfortable while minimizing your environmental impact and contribution to carbon emissions.

Here are our top picks you should look out for:

  • Organic cotton is breathable, lightweight, and free from toxic pesticides, making it ideal for T-shirts and dresses.
  • Linen, made from flax, is highly absorbent, quick-drying, and biodegradable—perfect for flowy summer suits and breezy tops.
  • Hemp is another sustainable option, providing UV protection and durability without requiring excessive water use.
  • For a silky, moisture-wicking option, Tencel™ (Lyocell)—derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp—is superb for activewear and lightweight blouses.
  • Recycled fabrics, such as polyester (rPET) made from ocean plastics, help reduce waste in swimwear and athletic gear.
  • Bamboo is soft, antibacterial, and thermoregulating, though it’s best when processed mechanically (not chemically).
