What to look out for when shopping for a pair of vegan skate shoes

Whether you're an ardent skater or you're just learning to skate, you need to look out for a few things when shopping for a classic pair of vegan-friendly skate shoes:

1. Durability

The first thing you must consider when shopping for a vegan skate shoe is durability.

The classic sneakers for skateboarding are suede shoes. Shoe experts consider suede one of the most durable materials. However, suede is far from vegan.

Most vegan shoes come in canvas or synthetic materials like fake leather. Canvas can come from different materials like nylon, polyester, cotton, or hemp

Canvas shoes, especially very thin ones, may not provide so much support. However, while canvas is not entirely immune to wear and tear (no material is), it is super breathable, lightweight, and flexible. You are sure to be more comfortable as you twist and turn on your skateboard.

2. Padding/feet protection

Skateboarding involves lots of movement, and just like any physical activity, it can put some stress on your body. When you skate, you pressure your ankles, toes, and feet. You can also get injured, especially if you're a newbie.

So, when shopping for your next pair, look out for shoes with proper padding intended for different skateboarding intensities. Look out for padded sidewalls, tongues, collars, and heels for comfort and protection.

Some skate shoes come with a rubber toe cap for toe protection. Toe caps help your sneakers last longer and do not restrict your movement while you skate.

3. Good traction

When we talk about skate shoes, traction is one of the most critical factors you need to consider. You don’t want to fall off your skateboard or look out for your shoes each time you perform tricks.

Your best bet will be soles made of rubber. Rubber is naturally gripping/sticky, giving you good enough traction as you skate. Some shoes come with features like vulcanized rubber to provide more traction.

4. A good fit

Comfort is paramount when it comes to skateboarding. You want to ensure your vegan sneakers are just the right fit. Some sneakers come with wider fitting to accommodate wide feet, while others are thinner. Check out the comments of other shoppers to ensure you are picking the correct size.

Once you find the right size, try them on as often as possible. If your feet can't extend comfortably, your sneakers may be too tight for you.

You may also want to consider what type of sneakers you are most comfortable in. You can choose between low-top, medium-top, or high-top sneakers. Low-top sneakers sit below the ankle. They offer good mobility but less foot protection. High tops are well-fitted, providing protection. However, they may hinder mobility. Most skaters go for mid-top sneakers, as they offer a good degree of both mobility and protection.

5. Sustainability

Of course, you will likely change your shoes often due to the wear and tear from skateboarding. However, you want to pick out sneakers with low impact. When you buy a new pair of vegan sneakers, consider the environmental impact of each pair of shoes. Was it made sustainably? What impact did it have on the workers making the shoes? Was it made sustainably?

Ensure your new pair of shoes are vegan-friendly and sustainable - i.e., made from materials with minimal environmental impact that we can renew. Typically, this involves shunning synthetics made from oil-based materials and going for organic, plant-based, sustainable fabrics. Note that some of the shoes below continue to use synthetic materials to qualify as vegan, which we’ve called out where appropriate.

How to break in your skateboarding shoes

Now you’ve bought a pair of skate shoes, and you're excited to try them on; however, they might feel tight at first. You need to break into them and get your feet used to them. It might even hurt for several days in a row.

Here are a few simple ways to break into your brand-new pair of shoes:

  • Wear them around your house. This is a straightforward way to break into your shoes faster. Your feet might hurt wearing them as you skate. However, wearing them around the house makes it a tad bit tolerable and makes the process of breaking in faster. Wear them around your bedroom, sitting room, up and down the stairs, and around your home. You can also wear them to your office or around your neighborhood.
  • Secondly, you can put on heavy socks. This gives your shoes a wider stretch, which helps you break in faster. It also protects your feet and prevents them from blisters.
  • You can try another method that doesn't involve wearing your shoes. Firstly, remove your insoles to protect your shoes. Secondly, fill two Ziploc bags with around ¾ of water, remove the air from the bags, and seal them tightly. Thirdly, untie your shoelaces and put the bag filled with water into the shoes, ensuring it gets to the toe area. Make sure the zipper part of the back sticks out of the shoe. Next, tie up the shoelaces slightly loose and ensure you don't puncture the bag. After this, place your shoes on a flat surface in your freezer and allow them to freeze for a few hours. You can leave them overnight. As the water expands and freezes, it stretches out your shoes in the process.

There are different styles of shoes designed for skateboarding, and also great for casual wear that you don't need to break in. Shoes that come with vulcanized soles, dual heel cushions, flexible EVA foam, and other materials may not require you to break into them.

Vegan skate shoes vs. Non-vegan skate shoes

There's a debate surrounding which type of shoe is genuinely more durable and comfortable to wear. Typically non-vegan shoes come in a synthetic material called Canvas. There are also other canvas options, including cotton canvas and synthetic leather. However, canvas shoes aren't the most durable in skating, considering they are lightweight and less sturdy.

On the other hand, other non-vegan options like leather skate shoes and suede shoes are the most popular options for non-vegan. They are also more durable. However, this comes at a costly price for animals. Researchers estimate that the leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals every year.

Not only is preventing animal cruelty the order of the day, but turning these animal skins into leather involves using harmful chemicals like coal tar derivatives and mineral salts, which are toxic to human beings and our environment.

Thankfully, brands are standing against animal cruelty by making a variety of vegan products, including shoes that perform as well as real leather and even better.

Final thoughts

Skating is fun yet an intensive activity that requires a lot from you and your shoes. Getting the perfect pair of skate shoes can redefine your experience, protect you from injury, and improve your performance. To find the ideal shoes, look out for shoes that provide comfort, durability, a good fit, proper protection, and good traction.
