FabLittleBag: The Fab Way to Fight Ocean Pollution

FabLittleBag aims to reduce aquatic pollution by providing a feel-good alternative to flushing tampons and pads – with the help of a FabLittleBag!

The mission is to a) help to keep used sanitary items out of the rivers, seas, and off our beaches and b) to make sanitary disposal a feel-good, confident experience. Also, we want to “screw the taboo” that still surrounds periods, the only way to do that is to keep talking, so we do, a lot!

What is so Fab about FabLittleBag?

FabLittleBag is a discreet, opaque, sealable bag partly made from organic material and is biodegradable. Using FabLittleBags can prevent horrible blockages and keeps sanitary items out of our rivers, oceans, and off our beaches. They also make the whole experience of disposing of a tampon or pad SO much better and a more confident process!

Uniquely, you can open the FabLittleBag with one hand using the patented finger loops - (handy when you're holding a used tampon!) and drop in your tampon or used pad, plus all the packaging, and pressing your thumb and finger together, seal it securely closed. It makes things less awkward when you’re in the nightmare scenario of not having a bin or only 2 sheets of loo roll left!

What inspired you to start FabLittleBag?

I just felt so incredibly frustrated! I wanted to do something to make a difference to that oh so familiar dilemma: disposing of a used tampon or sanitary pad. I really hated doing the “Loo Roll Wrap” and the HandBag Smuggle, when there was no bin ... I felt sure there had to be a better way. There wasn’t, so I invented one. FabLittleBag was born.

So, with a large dollop of bloody-mindedness and hard work, everything’s coming together, with some interesting conversations with male supermarket buyers and investors about tampon disposal along the way! So, whether we’re saving your blushes, your flushes or the planet, one tampon and pad at a time, we hope you’ll become a fan of FabLittleBag.

How has TRVST supported you?

They recommended a fab lady called Laura to us to provide us with some help one day a week as we are so stretched in terms of the To Do lists and the ability to get all tasks done between essentially two of us!

Why is collaboration important to you?

We support Well Being of Women charity by donating a portion of every dispenser and starter pack we sell to them and the amazing work they do into all things biological for women. We have so much to be grateful for in terms of the studies they have funded that now provide cures and preventions for many gynecological issues. We collaborate whenever we can with charities, supplying them with free samples, etc, but this is hard as we get asked a lot and we are still a small growing company and cannot afford to give away too much stock! I dedicate time to various projects where I can help e.g. local Red Box Project and support across social the magnificent work done by Amika George, Scarlett Curtis, and Co on the Period Poverty issues.

What was the latest thing that made you hopeful about the future of waste reduction/ aquatic pollution?

I find it encouraging that people power is having a big impact, and companies and manufacturers are now addressing, or at least under pressure to address, plastic usage and disposal which is fantastic - however, we also have to beware the “knee-jerk” reaction as this can simply create a whole other set of issues if it is not well thought through and unless a holistic group of experts is not involved to address a longer-term solution.

What’s one thing someone can do today to improve ocean pollution?

Lobby your MP and Local Authority to provide the relevant infrastructure needed to sort, collect and treat the many different types of plastics that we all have in our lives, that and of course personally focus on reducing unnecessary plastics, reusing, and recycling. That is more than one thing, but one thing is not enough !!!
