InsideOut: Smashing the Stigma around Mental Health

InsideOut is on a mission to smash the stigma around mental health in the workplace.

Founded by Rob Stephenson in 2017, one of InsideOut's main initiatives is the ‘People’s List’. Inspired by the excellent work of Suki Sandhu (Out-standing) and Karen Mattison MBE (with and Timewise Power 50), they are looking to create a ripple effect by publishing a list of business executive role models who are prepared to share their experiences of mental ill-health. The first edition will hopefully be published within the next year.

In the next year, Rob Stephenson hopes to complete the MindCycle Tour - his Tour de France-inspired Initiative which involved him taking a roadshow directly into workplaces and exhibitions in July.  He will be riding the whole 3,329km of the Tour de France on a smart trainer, stimulating conversations about Mental Health and raising funds for the charity: MQ: Transforming Mental Health.

"For 15 years, I hit the fact I am bipolar. I am a business owner with supportive people around me. Yet every week when I attended therapy I put the word “Physio” in my diary. People in my business must have thought that I had the worst physiotherapist in the world, unable to fix my back during these weekly appointments. They also then heard me talk about successful bike rides of over 160km at the weekends. The real shame that I felt was when I realised how wrong this was. Now, I’m starting my story and tackling the stigma that stopped me talking about my bipolar is in the first place. - Rob Stephenson, Founder"

There has been a growing social movement around how we, as a society, think and behave about mental health. Significant progress has been made in the entertainment and sporting worlds and, recently, we have heard the Royal Family speak out. However, there is still much to do in the business world. The InsideOut team believes that we need more executives to share their stories so that employees feel more comfortable also speaking about their mental health. InsideOut exists to help achieve this by encouraging executives to bring what is on the inside.. Out.

How has TRVST supported you?

"TRVST has proved to be an invaluable partner to me as I launched my social enterprise. They plugged some gaps in my personal skillset and have been proactive in suggesting ideas on how to take the project forward. They were a key partner to me as I got the initiative off the ground."- Rob Stephenson, Founder

How can a corporate partner support InsideOut?

InsideOut is looking to partner with corporates who share in their mission of breaking the stigma around mental ill-health. They are keen to work with organizations that are undergoing culture change, who care about the humans that are their resources, and who believe that people should be able to seek help for their mental ill-health conditions just like their physical illnesses. To ensure the longer-term financial stability of the InsideOut List, Rob is keen to take the initiative sustainable through corporate sponsorship.
