Why Better Conversations Week Matters

Dr. Loren Ekroth, a communication expert for decades, found Better Conversations Week in 2002. He decided to coincide the event with Thanksgiving Week, during which we had many chances to talk with others.
The annual observation simply teaches the value of effective communication, focusing on empathy, active listening, and mutual respect. It shows us how we must fix our problems of strained conversations in social settings and personal connections.
Most importantly, today, in the age of social media, good communication has become even more important. For instance, digital interactions often give rise to superficiality and conversational narcissism, which we can overcome only through listening and empathizing.
Let's embody the purpose of this event everyday to stop misunderstanding, misinterpretation, one-sided talks,
How to Hold Better Conversations
- Practice active listening, which involves fully concentrating, understanding, responding, and remembering what is being said. We should not just hear the words but also understand the complete message.
- Ask open-ended questions. These questions cannot be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no,' and encourage the other person to share more about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
- Show empathy and understanding. Try to understand the other person's perspective and feelings, even if you don't necessarily agree with them.
- Use nonverbal cues effectively. Maintain eye contact, nod to show understanding, and use facial expressions and body language that are appropriate to the conversation.
- Practice mindfulness during conversations. Fully exist in the moment of conversation. Don't check your phone or think about what you will say next while the other person is speaking.
