Thinking about how paradox of boundaries creates freedom

I hope you are able to do things that bring you joy and you can be grateful for every day.

As I write this, I am thinking of those things for me, and friendship is top of my list. I am fortunate to have had some great support and virtual coffees on a regular basis in these crazy times. I am very happy to have more, if you fancy a virtual coffee, let me know!

As someone who creates structure around most of what I do (and who I be 😊) and compartmentalises my work and personal live religiously, I have taken comfort in this quote from David Sherry:

"In a world where there are no boundaries, being able to draw them for yourself is a superpower."

Now that work and home have bled into our homes so abruptly and absolutely, I have been helping a few people create boundaries and free themselves to focus on what is important to them, through practical energy management and expectation setting (and how to say no).

And that is where the paradox lay.

By giving yourself boundaries either with time, effort, attention and/or enjoyment, you make space for what is important. If you don’t create boundaries for yourself, who will?

Below are some articles that can give you inspiration to consider how you structure your life to get some freedom (but being practical as we all have lots of responsibilities that do take time we may prefer to use elsewhere).

And just to consider what is important in life, I had to share A letter to my new born daughter by Lawrence Yeo

I hope you enjoy!

Warmest Wishes

To Stay Focused, Manage Your Emotions

Oldie, but a goodie, your most precious resource is not your time. It’s your focused attention. Time merely passes, while focused attention makes things happen... it inevitably involves disappointing people, but productive leaders realise that they can’t meet all of these requests and must ignore many of them.

If it hurts, it’s probably true

This is a great article that offers a different perspective, if it is too difficult, stop doing it. We are often not encouraged enough to think like this as hard work = success (or does it).

Time Confetti and the Broken Promise of Leisure

This goes a long way to explain why we don't have all that time we thought we did to get things done and that even when we do focus our time, it can get hijacked. Do we really have more time for leisure than we did 50 years ago?

A great book!

In Order to Live by Yeomi Park (on Amazon)
I read this very quickly and it puts a lot of things in to perspective when you read about how people are raised and how much it affects. It made me reflect about how much we take for granted, down to how we think about the world and others and that these things can't just be removed by moving to a different culture. We have to respect our differences in learning, background and understand our privilege.
