World’s First Global Climate Action Summit for a Recovery From Covid-19
The global COVID-19 pandemic came as a dramatic wake-up call of the importance of Climate Change for our daily lives and economies.

The online international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS 2021), hosted by the Netherlands Government, creates the first-ever dedicated platform of global leaders and local stakeholders to place the world firmly on a pathway to accelerated climate adaptation and resilience towards a recovery from COVID-19.
The online global conference aims to accelerate, innovate, and scale up the world’s efforts in adapting our societies and economies to the inevitable effects of climate change, such as extreme rainfall, hurricanes, drought, heat, wildfires, pandemics, and rising sea levels over the coming decade.
CAS 2021 will jumpstart a year of climate-related events and link up with the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda Week, Jan. 25-29. The Summit will be attended by World leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron, UN Secretary‐General Antonio Guterres, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, The Deputy Prime Minister of China Han Zheng, and the US Climate Envoy John Kerry, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, President Ali Bongo of Gabon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, President Alberto Fernández of Argentina, IMF‐director Kristalina Georgieva, former UN Secretary‐General Ban Ki‐moon, Bill Gates, co-founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In his blog, Bill Gates says an Adaptation Action Agenda should include eliminating CO2 emissions while adapting to the warming that is already happening by spurring innovative industries and breakthroughs in the way we generate and store clean electricity, grow food, make things, move around, and heat and cool our buildings; creating more than 370,000 jobs for the post-pandemic recovery; and ensuring that there is global collaboration in everyone/ all species benefits from the transition to a green economy.[1] In essence, he promotes environmental and climate solutions that go hand in hand with protecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems, promoting agroecology, mobilizing funding for biodiversity, and spotlighting the link between deforestation, species, and human health.
During this summit, over 2,500 scientists from more than 130 countries, the Global Commission on Adaptation will release a signed statement calling on world leaders, decision-makers, and investors to change the way we understand, plan, and invest for a changing climate to ensure we limit future damage and pandemics like Corona.[2]
Australian National University vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt urged governments to listen to science and expert advice to avoid "cataclysmic climate change." "As a member of the world's scientific community, I'm here to tell you that science, as always, stands ready to serve the world's people," Professor Schmidt said. "Renewing our trust in science and other forms of knowledge is vital. In recent times, that trust has been undermined. "'Science,' 'expertise,' 'evidence' ... The purveyors of doubt have tried to devalue these powerful weapons in the fight against climate change. We can't let them succeed."[3]
