What are you doing today to make yourself feel proud?
I currently have the song on a loop in my head as I write this. I recommend you do the same whilst reading it 🥳
But, how are you doing? If the answer is ‘meh’ (or worse), like me, join the club of so many people I know who are saying the same thing. It has been a hard slog and one that you are doing phenomenally well with. In all those years I grew up wanting to be an adult, no-one told us how hard it was, sometimes, I am not sure I like it and it is no fun.
The treacle swimming of lockdown makes it hard to remember how well we are doing. I have read in places that those who suffer from depression should focus on celebrating getting out of bed, getting dressed, what we see as the ‘simple’ things. I have decided to focus more on anything that I do that went as expected or better and giving myself a gold star.
I started this week and I have found my mood pick up almost immediately. My enthusiasm for things changed, I got things done that in a virtuous circle motivated me to get more things done. I suspect the sun shining on Monday also played a part!
Alternatively, follow the example Plato the internet gave us – “Happiness springs from doing good and helping others”. I do this by baking cakes for my local hospital where my friend works, not a massive thing, but she says their smiles make all the difference with everything else they deal with. That has given me rhythm through all this.

An Antidote for Environmental Despair
With what I regularly read about how slowly we are moving on climate change, I get disheartened about how much I cannot do. This article boosted me and made me realise we must take hope. Listening to Prof Myles Allen on Life Scientific on BBC Sounds may also do the same.
From Dr Samantha Boardman A new survey of 2,000 adults found that 80 percent feel much better after dancing for a few minutes. Three in four respondents went so far as to say that hitting the dance floor genuinely makes them happy. Another 70 percent said they bust a move to relieve stress and relax, while over half believe dancing benefits their mental health.
Plodding and Bursting
I know of a few people who feel the way they approach work is not necessarily very productive. This article highlights that both are equally valid and how you can use your different energy to work in a way that works for you.

A Women of No Importance (on Amazon)
This is a brilliant real life story written almost like fiction. Virginia Hall as a spy in WW2 and her life through all this, with one leg. One of the best books I have read. Thanks Ruth for the recommendation!
