What is a cloud?

We should discuss how clouds are formed to understand better how much a cloud weighs. Clouds appear in the air when suspended water vapor condenses into water droplets and ice crystals. Condensation occurs because of existing particles in the atmosphere known as condensation nuclei1.
Cloud formation starts from creating water in its gaseous state, water vapor. Earth produces vapor whenever the sun heats Earth’s surface and oceans, evaporating water into the air. As the air becomes warmer, it rises higher into the atmosphere. However, the vapor going higher into the sky also causes the air to cool down.
As the air becomes colder, the vapor combines with the condensation nuclei because cold air can’t hold as much water as warmer air can. Condensation nuclei are dust and pollen particles floating in the air. Water vapor attaches itself to as many nuclei as possible until it becomes water droplets, becoming a cloud.
Clouds are made of tiny droplets about a hundredth of a millimeter in diameter. A cubic meter of air contains about 100 million water droplets. Clouds at higher altitudes in the sky form from tiny ice crystals, which are about a tenth of a millimeter long and give clouds a thin and wispy appearance.
When clouds float over a water body, like lakes and rivers, they pick up extra moisture. The additional humidity adds to the cloud or forms a separate cloud. Clouds stop rising in the sky when they have released all heat stored during the change from liquid to vapor. They only keep rising when fast atmospheric winds blow them into the stratosphere, where the temperature increases instead of decreases2.
How much do clouds weigh?
An average cumulus cloud weighs about 1.1 million pounds. Remember that the average cumulus cloud is 1 kilometer by 1 kilometer. How do we know how to calculate the clouds’ weight?
We do not know, but scientists have a method of measuring the cloud’s weight. The method requires measuring the appropriate size of the cloud. Scientists estimate a cloud's weight by calculating its volume using the metric system.
They convert kilometer units to meter units, measuring the cloud’s shadow to determine its length. Phillis Engelbert says it is easier to calculate the weight of small to medium cumulus clouds because they have similar height, width, and length units. Scientists estimate the weight of a typical cloud with almost equal length, height, and width.
They calculate the length of a cloud by measuring its shadow on the ground. For example, a cumulus cloud is 1000 meters long, 1000 meters high, and 1000 meters wide. We can calculate the volume of the cumulus cloud by multiplying all its dimensions. So, height x width x length; 1000 m x 1000 m x 1000 m = 1,000,000,000 cubic meters.
Once you have the volume of the cloud, multiply it by the predetermined water weight within one cubic meter of the cloud. The predetermined value of the water within one cubic meter of the cloud is 0.5 g. So 1,000,000,000 x 0.5 = 500,000,000 g. The weight of the cumulonimbus cloud used as an example is 500,000 kg or 500 million grams3.
How do we determine the weight of the tiny water droplets in clouds floating?
After calculating the weight of a cloud, you can also calculate the weight of the water it holds. Simply convert how much a cloud weighs into pounds. Using the example to explain calculating the cloud weight, we’ll convert 500,000 kg to pounds: 500,000 kg = 1,102,311 pounds.
Depending on the temperature, one gallon of water in the air weighs between 7.99 and 8.34 pounds. Using the higher value 8.34, divide 1,102,311 pounds to get the gallons of water in a cloud that weighs 500,000 kg. 1,102,311÷8.34 = 132,172 gallons.
Another example is to calculate the weight of the water in a cloud weighing 1,000,000 kg. First, convert 1,000,000 kilograms to pounds and divide it by 8.34. One million kg equals 2,204,622 pounds; 2,204,622 8.34 = 264,343 gallons of water3.
How does the cloud release water?

According to atmospheric research, a cloud weighing 500,000 kg has 132,172 gallons of water. So, how does the cloud release all the water it holds, and how does it affect its weight?
Clouds releasing water is known as precipitation or rain. Precipitation occurs when the water droplets in the clouds become too heavy to resist gravity. The water droplets in the cloud become too heavy for the nuclei particles to hold, causing rainfall. Condensation isn’t enough to make rain fall.
According to NOAA, precipitation occurs through two processes. The first occurs when water droplets in warm clouds come in contact and change their electric charge. Tiny droplets with negative and positive electrical charges merge. They merge and grow heavy enough to fall to Earth like rain, snow, or hail.
The second process occurs in cold clouds where ice crystals and water droplets are together. However, water droplets move to the ice crystals because of an imbalance in the vapor pressure. Eventually, the ice crystals grow heavy enough to fall.
Most clouds don’t produce any form of precipitation, and not all clouds produce rain that reaches the ground. Some clouds produce rain that evaporates mid-air. However, a single raindrop contains an estimated value of a million cloud droplets. Also, raindrops are bigger than one millimeter2.
So, how does rainfall affect how much a cloud weighs? The weight and density of a cloud reduce after snow or rainfall because it releases the water content that makes up the cloud’s volume and density.
Types of clouds and their weight?
Not all clouds have the same weight because the amount of water within them varies. An average cumulus cloud holds the most water, weighing 1.1 million pounds. Cumulus clouds form at altitudes between 1,000 and 5,000 ft.
Another cloud that holds a lot of water is a thunderstorm cloud, commonly known as a cumulonimbus cloud. It forms at altitudes between 2,000 ft and 5,000 ft. A thunderstorm cloud can measure up to 10 km high and 10 km wide and has 2 grams of water per cubic meter, totaling about 2 million tonnes of water.
Stratocumulus clouds form 1,000 to 4,000 ft in the sky, sometimes higher. They are among the clouds that don't precipitate—no rainfall, snow, or hail. Stratus clouds produce rainfall and fog, especially in hilly or coastal areas.
Mid-level clouds with heavy weight and high water capacity are altostratus, nimbostratus, and altocumulus clouds. The base of an altostratus cloud ranges between 10,000 and 20,000 ft. It's a thick cloud that produces light showers, while altocumulus clouds occur at altitudes between 6,500 and 20,000 ft. Nimbostratus clouds also produce moderate to heavy rainfall because they are about 10,000 ft high4.
