How Old Are Older Persons?

Global organizations like the World Health Organization recognize the term "older persons" as referring to individuals who have reached the age of 65 and above. However, we must also acknowledge that the definition of an "older person" may vary across cultures and societies.

Why the International Day of Older Persons Matters

The International Day of Older Persons focuses on the challenges encountered by the aging population, such as ageism. Ageism marginalizes older individuals and affects their mental and physical health, access to services, and overall well-being.

Additionally, as we grow old, our bodies become more prone to illnesses. Heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are some of the most common. In an ageing world, a sound healthcare system enables older people to enjoy their fundamental freedoms and get more out of life.

Many older people, especially in developing countries, lack regular income, while those in developed nations are at risk of poverty.

On a lighter note, older adults possess a wealth of wisdom and knowledge accumulated over a lifetime. Many actively contribute to their communities by sharing their experiences, volunteering, or mentoring younger generations.

Older people are transforming societies everywhere. Let's honor and protect them, not just on the International Day of Older Persons but every day.

Data and Statistics

united nations population over sixty five

The global population of people aged 65 nearly doubled from 5.5% in 1974 to 10.3% in 2024. The United Nations projects this percentage will reach 20.7% by 2074, effectively doubling again.

Global population projections estimate that by the late 2070s, the number of people aged 65 and above will rise to 2.2 billion, exceeding the population of children under 18.

It's expected that by the mid-2030s, there will be 265 million individuals who are 80 or older, overtaking the number of infants aged one year or less.

In various countries and regions where the total population has peaked or is set to peak in upcoming decades, by the end of the 2020s, those aged 65 and above will outnumber children under 18.

By 2050, 80% of the older population will live in low- and middle-income countries.

In the United States, the U.S. Census Bureau projects that by 2034, the population aged 65 years and older will surpass the population under 18.

  • Volunteer at local senior centers or nursing homes to provide companionship, assistance, and interaction to lonely or isolated older persons.
  • Help them with chores, errands, or transportation. Many older persons struggle with mobility and may find grocery shopping, house cleaning, or getting to medical appointments challenging.
  • Advocate for policies and programs that protect the rights and well-being of older persons, such as affordable healthcare, housing, and social services.
  • Educate yourself and others about ageism. Challenge stereotypes and prejudices about aging to build a society that is more inclusive and supportive of older people.
  • Encourage young people to spend time with older people to foster understanding and mutual respect and provide older people with a sense of purpose and engagement.
